No doubt, there are thousands of word processing apps for Apple Mac OS, but only few are really worth the effort. Oct 25, 2010 Hi, I am new to Mac, and was wondering where do I use a program like Word on microsoft for MAC??? Do I have to buy a program to use that and something like excel??, Mac OS X (10.6.3) Posted on Sep 20, 2010 8:00 PM. Reply I have this question too (239) I have this question too Me too (239. What is the microsoft word program on. The following is a list of Macintosh software—notable computer applications for current macOS systems. For software designed for the classic Mac OS, see List of old Macintosh software. This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it.
Microsoft Word is the standard word processing application for computers running the Windows operating system. Word is not a central program on the Mac, which comes equipped with Text Edit and offers its own version of a word processing program through iWork. Lacking a few OS X features: While it is very much a Mac app, Word for Mac doesn't use OS X's Autosave or support the ability to rename, tag, and change the location of a document in a document's.
Brawny word processor: With its solid collection of templates, useful formatting and design tools, and powerful collaboration capabilities, Microsoft Word is what every other word processor is measured against.
Refreshed look: Microsoft's update brings the Mac version of Word a bit more in line with its Windows counterpart, adding the ribbon, for example. Word 2016 for Mac is also optimized for Retina displays and can handle full-screen-mode Multi-Touch gestures.
Living in the cloud: Microsoft Word -- and the rest of the Office for Mac suite -- has hooks into the cloud via Microsoft's OneDrive service. You can store, edit, and automatically update your Word documents from a Mac, a PC, or any mobile device that's part of your plan.
Real-time collaboration: You can share a Word document either from your Mac or through Office Online, and then collaborate in real time with colleagues via OneDrive. Comments are now threaded, making it easier to carry on a conversation in a file.
Fresh design: The ribbon's Design tab for Word offers tools for sprucing up your documents, giving you quick control over colors, fonts, borders, and more.
Cons
Lacking a few OS X features: While it is very much a Mac app, Word for Mac doesn't use OS X's Autosave or support the ability to rename, tag, and change the location of a document in a document's title bar.
Bottom Line
Mac users waited five years between updates to the OS X version of Word, but Microsoft used the time to freshen its word processor's look and expand its collaborations tools, including real-time editing with colleagues. If you are using an earlier version of Word or work collaboratively, this is an essential revision.

Hi,
Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting the question. As per your description you are having tough time working with Word since it keeps crashing. Let me help you with the issue.
In order to troubleshoot the issue try the steps below and check if it helps:
Ensure that all the available updates for Office 2011 as well as Mac OS X are installed on the system.
If that does not help, create a new User Profile on mac and check if you have the same issue on Mac.
If it works in the new User Profile, log back into the older User Profile and remove the preferences associated with Word.
Steps 1 and 2, in the following article would help you do so:
I hope the above steps help. If you still have questions, you can always reply and I’ll be happy to assist you.
Thank you

Niyamah: What is this nonsense? You can see by her crash dump that she is fully up-to-date, can't you?
Ceedeeeceedee:
Yes, I would get rid of PopClip and see if that solves things. Anything that sits between Word and the Apple OS X clipboard (as PopClip does...) is asking for trouble. The fact that a Microsoft Component Plugin appears in the blame module name makes me suspicious that it's an add-in like PopClip.
Post back if uninstalling PopClip does not solve the issue.
Cheers

Thank you for trying to help. Microsoft Tech Support has tried but not been able to fix this problem, after uninstalling and reinstalling and manually deleting fonts and changing preferences -- for hours! They were very nice guys, but the problem remains the same. Truthfully, at this point, I don't even want to try uninstalling PopClip to see if it helps. I have lost so much work I don't want to take a chance at losing any more. I think this program is defective. I'm not the only one who talks about it freezing, from what I've read.
I'm trying to get a refund and am looking for another word-processing program with track changes -- after decades of using Word. Maybe that's Pages. I will give it a shot.

You might try running Disk Utility application and using it to verify the startup volume and repair disk permissions. If there's something amiss in Mac OS, nothing you do with Office or Pages will fix it.
Based on what you said, you did not try completely removing Office 2011 and then reinstall. That's the cure that covers all bases, but do use Disk Utility first.

I have had the same problem for years. Here is the low down on word. It's fine for short docs, 1-30 pages, But if like me you have a174 page long thesis with track changes by 4 people in it, it simply cannot handle the amount of data.
It is so bulky with all its add on features, that it can crash.
Before I started my PhD I did lot of research on word processors and I found out that people who write books or long thesis do not ever use microsoft word.
They use on the mac programs like mellel - a stable robust fast word processor.
I did everything in mellel = had to trouble shoot to get track changes show up but it works. You can export it into word for otehr if you are sharing....There is also scrivener and Ulyssis, just do some research on alternative word processors.
For biblio program I use SENTE -

The most likely cause of this crash is that you need to install updates.
I think the first troubleshooting step to take is: Ensure your Mac and Office have the latest updates. Here’s how to install updates:
Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection, then:

- Update Mac OS X. Open the App store and click on the Updates button. Install the updates.
- After, in any Office application go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates to launch the AutoUpdate app. Let AutoUpdate install updates and then restart your Mac.

I have had this problem, on and off for a year. I think that mac and word just do not work well together.
Use Open Office. It's free and it works.
